Q: What are IP and MAC addresses?
A: Every computer connected to a network receives an IP address which enables network facilities to route and deliver data to a specific computer. The MAC address (sometimes referred to as "Physical Address") is the hardware ID of the network adapter.
Q: Why does Polarion request these addresses?
A: Polarion's licensing system utilizes these addresses to prevent accidental or intentional misuse of its licensed software products. On startup, the Polarion server checks to see if the properties of the network connections and the server computer are the same as specified in the license. If they are not, then the server writes a log message and shuts down.
Q: How do I find the IP and MAC addresses?
A: You may need to consult your organization's IT department. The network or server administrator who is setting up your Polarion server should be able to obtain these addresses for you. If you have access to the computer that will host Polarion, you can run the ipconfig utility (Windows), or the ifconfig utility (Linux) to view information about your configured network interfaces which includes IP and MAC address.
Q: How will Polarion store this private data?
A: Actually, IP and MAC addresses are not private data. Every message that goes across a network contains this information. Polarion uses the addresses you supply to generate your unique license key, after which it does not retain the information.
Q: What if my IP address is dynamic?
A: Dynamic IP addresses are usual for client PCs. If you are installing Polarion on a PC for evaluation, please contact Polarion to obtain a free evaluation license which does not require IP information. The dynamic IP of a server is generally assigned once and then does not change, as fully dynamic IPs for servers would result in undesirable network overhead. Please check with your network administrator and contact Polarion software if you have questions.
Q: What if my server is virtual and/or outsourced?
A: Virtualized servers also have IP and MAC addresses which your IT department should be able to provide. If your server is outsourced, you will need to contact the person in your organization who administrates the outsourced server, or your provider's technical support to obtain IP and MAC addresses for the outsourced server that will host your Polarion installation.
Q: What if my server changes, or the IP or MAC address changes?
A: Polarion Software will be happy to generate a new license key for you at any time. Please re-use the form above with the new IP and MAC address of the computer that will host Polarion.
